    Land Cruiser 70th Anniversary Edition

The iconic Land Cruiser was introduced to the world some 70 years ago. Originally known as the Toyota BJ and intended for military use, this four-wheel drive juggernaut quickly went on to earn an enviable reputation for its go-anywhere capability and rugged construction. The Land Cruiser name was coined in 1954 as the model expanded into the civilian market.

In celebration of its achievements, Toyota has welcomed a special edition 70th Anniversary model which is packed with unique features that further cement this vehicle’s legendary status. The number 70 is also special as it demarcates the Land Cruiser line-up which consists of the 76 Station Wagon, 78 Wagon and 79 “bakkie”. Here are 5 things that you need to know.

    1. The Land Cruiser Range explained

The Land Cruiser range consists of three distinct family groups – the 70-series, the Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser 300. Whilst the packaging, usage and target market of each are slightly different, they all share the ‘unbreakable’ DNA developed by their forefathers.

    2. Visual updated

A unique 70-year emblem has been affixed to the exterior and also included on the durable cotton canvas seat covers – making the 70th edition instantly recognisable. The Toyota ellipse has been replaced by prominent TOYOTA lettering on the grille. Another nostalgic touch is the bespoke Land Cruiser badge reminiscent of the iconic 40-series, which the celebration model wears proudly on its side doors. Other items include a 3mm rubberised load bed and an inner load-bed protector.

    3. The right tools for the job

The rest of the package focuses on equipping the model with features which not only play the visual part, but deliver when the going gets tough. Here, the heavy-duty front steel bumper, integrated winch and tow bar equip the Land Cruiser 70th anniversary model with the tools required for the job.

    4. Under the bonnet

Toyota is known for its reliability and the Land Cruiser has led the charge in that regard. The 70th Anniversary model seen here makes use of the brands tried and tested powerhouse, the revered 1VD-FTV 4.5-litre turbo diesel engine, churning out 151kW and 430Nm from a low 1200rpm. The Fuel Consumption index is pegged at 11.3 l/100km. This motor is used in a variety of Toyota models which reaffirms its capability and reliability to get the job done.

    5. Other unique items

Toyota has added a few other unique items into the mix when it comes to the 70th Anniversary edition. These include niceties such as unique grey seat covers with 70th edition embroidery, Land Cruiser branded floor mats, Touchscreen audio system with Navigation with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay.
